Firbank House in Welwyn Garden City

Firbank Housing Society – Accommodation for the over 60s in Hertfordshire

Firbank Housing Society Limited is a non-profit making organisation founded by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) providing rented housing for active older people in a very attractive setting in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

History of Firbank Housing

Firbank was inspired by Jack and Ruth Catchpool, both members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) when, in 1957, they financed the building of four flats. Since then the accommodation has increased to eight flats and eight bungalows. Every endeavour is made to keep them in good condition with up to date amenities. There is a communal garden, small parts of which can be worked by residents with a keen interest in gardening.

Firbank is a registered housing association, independent and non-profit making.

Purpose of Firbank Housing

The purpose of Firbank is to provide older people with the facilities for remaining active and independent. Whilst it is not sheltered accommodation with warden support, there exists a tradition of mutual help within the community, together with support from the members of Welwyn Garden City Quaker Meeting. A variety of social activities are arranged from time to time. Some account is taken of personal, family or other associations with Welwyn Garden City and the Religious Society of Friends, bearing in mind the Firbank community’s close association with the Welwyn Garden City Quaker Meeting.
